Increasing Apple Production and Brix with Metalosate®

Metalosate increased Brix in red apples

Apple quality and sweetness is imperative to the overall production of apples. Apples contain a myriad of health benefits because of their rich fiber content and antioxidants. Eating apples may promote weight loss, gut health and cognitive health. As the most popular fruit in the United States, apple production tops 240 million bushels of apples each year, with one in three being exported. Apple production affects not only our diets, but also the economy. Thus, delivering proper nutrients to apple trees creates a more sustainable and vibrant food chain.

Superior Bioavailability

Metalosate amino acid chelated minerals provide bioavailable minerals that move through the tree’s leaf and into growing points, like the fruit. How can bioavailability be demonstrated in the real world?  Researchers evaluated different foliar fertilizers by applying them to apple trees and then measuring the amount of calcium on fruit peel and in the fruit flesh. Significantly more calcium was found on the peel of the fruit treated with competitor products., meaning that the minerals molecules were either stuck to the leaf or in the cuticle. However, calcium in the flesh was found at 33 percent greater levels in apples from the Metalosate treated trees compared to trees treated with competitor products. This demonstrates Metalosate’s ability to penetrate the plant cuticle and move to growing points. Since calcium provides a central component to cell wall integrity, this translates to very real benefits.

Sweet Rewards

Dry matter affects an apple’s flavor, nutrient profile and health benefits. Brix determines flavor and sweetness. Nutrient balance, especially potassium, throughout all growth stages heavily affects final brix and quality of produce. For this reason, mid to late season potassium sprays were evaluated with the goal of increasing brix. Metalosate potassium outperformed the grower standard in providing additional brix. In fact, Metalosate increased brix by five percent. Metalosate treated apples provided higher quality, sweeter apples. That’s Nutrition Delivered.
