The refrigeration market utilizes numerous different types of specialty gases including Fluorinated Gases (F-Gases) and natural refrigerants. The refrigeration market is evolving due to environmental regulations including the European Union’s EC 842/2006 F-Gas Regulation which protects the environment by reducing emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases through quantitative limits for the placing on the market of hydrofluorocarbons. An alternative to F-Gases are natural refrigerants. This includes ammonia, propylene, n-butane, and propane which are used as a refrigerant in large industrial processes such as bulk ice making and industrial food processing.

The natural refrigerants have limited impacts to global warming (compared to fluorinated gases). Today, due to the stringent regulations, natural refrigerants are preferred over F-Gases.
