Oil & Gas: Clay Stabilization

The oil and gas industry uses clay stabilizers to mitigate the challenges that drilling and stimulation cause, such as wellbore instability, cuttings disintegration, bit balling, fines migration, and reduction in permeability. Choline chloride and choline bicarbonate are attractive for use as clay stabilizers for their effectiveness and environmentally friendly qualities.

Choline salts have numerous advantages over potassium chloride (KCl) and other traditional clay stabilizers, including:
• Excellent performance at much lower usage levels than other stabilizers
• More highly biodegradable
• Reduced release of excess chloride released into the environment, up to 75% less than KCl
• Compatibility with a wide variety of other fracturing fluid components, including surfactants, friction reducers, biocides, cross-linkers, and breakers
• Minimized chemical handling, including pre-mixing and saltwater disposal
• Flexibility for use in diverse environments

Methylamines

Balchem is a supplier of methylamines, including monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamine (DMA), and trimethylamine (TMA). These critical chemical building blocks are used for a variety of products and processes, including agricultural herbicides, water treatment chemicals, oil and gas treatment, and rubber production.
